Speed Cleaning has you covered with this green method of cleaning tile grout
Do you recall what color your grout was when it was new? Or if your tile was installed by a previous homeowner, do you have any idea what color the grout is supposed to be? Follow Speed Cleaning's steps to unveil the true color of your grout. And – bonus! – it’s a “green” method of cleaning!
You’ll need hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, a small brush, and two clean cloths.
- Hydrogen peroxide acts as an oxidizer with a mild bleaching effect. Start in an inconspicuous area to test the results on your particular grout (colored, sanded, etc.). We do not recommend this method if your tile is marble. Pour a small amount of peroxide along the grout line, or for wall tiles, press a peroxide-soaked cotton ball along the grout line. Scrub the line with a narrow brush like Speed Cleaning’s Grout Brush or just a toothbrush. (However, the grout brush is ideal because the bristles are slightly stiffer than a regular toothbrush.)
- Pour a little more peroxide if necessary and then sprinkle baking soda along the grout line. Work the baking soda and peroxide into a paste as you scrub and then let it dry completely. For wall tiles, make the paste in a cup and apply it as you scrub.
- Wipe up the dried paste with a cloth or vacuum it up, and then wipe away any remaining residue with a damp cloth. You may have to repeat these steps to achieve the best results.
Once you get the grout in an entire area clean, routine maintenance should be sufficient for some time to come. Now – are you ready to find out what color your grout really is?
