The Best Way to Clean Baseboards and Keep Them Spotless for Longer
by Amy Sardone on Dec 13, 2024
Baseboards enhance the style of any room while shielding your walls from scuffs and damage. However, they tend to attract dust, dirt, and smudges, making them a challenge to keep spotless. Regular vacuuming and mopping rarely do the trick, leaving baseboards overlooked during cleaning. With these simple yet effective tips, you can transform baseboard cleaning into a quicker and more efficient task!
Gather Your Cleaning Supplies
Before starting, gather all the necessary tools and cleaning supplies to save time and energy. Here's what you’ll need:
Vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment
Whisk Brush
Bucket
Warm water
Red Juice by Speed Cleaning (For painted or non-wood baseboards)*
Sh-Clean by Speed Cleaning (For wood baseboards to clean effectively without damaging the finish)*
Toothbrush (for crevices and intricate detailing)
Melamine sponge
Knee pads
If you’re cleaning baseboards in multiple rooms, a caddy will help you carry everything conveniently.
Prep Your Space Move furniture and rugs out of the way to give yourself room to work. Use Knee Pads for protection & comfort. Pro tip: Cleaning one room at a time makes the process less overwhelming.
Start by Removing Dust Use your vacuum’s brush attachment to remove loose dirt and dust from the baseboards. For any remaining debris in crevices, use a Whisk Brush to gently sweep it out. Wipe Down Baseboards with Red Juice Mix a small amount of Red Juice by Speed Cleaning with warm water in a bucket. Dip a cotton cloth into the mixture, wring it out well, and wipe down the baseboards section by section. Use Red Juice on baseboards made from plastic or painted surfaces to clean and refresh them without causing damage. Immediately dry each section with another clean Speed Cleaning cotton cloth to avoid streaks or water damage. Tackle Stubborn Stains For wooden baseboards, use Sh-Clean by Speed Cleaning, which is gentle on wood but tough on grime. Apply Sh-Clean directly to the stain or buildup. Gently scrub with a stiff brush. Wipe away residue with a damp Speed Cleaning cotton cloth, then dry the area completely. Final Touch: Buff and Shine To finish, buff the baseboards with a dry cotton cloth for a polished look. For white baseboards, consider using a microfiber cloth to reduce static and prevent dust buildup.
Use a Melamine Sponge and Toothbrush for Detailed Cleaning Sometimes, baseboards have stubborn dirt, grime, or hard-to-reach areas where a regular cloth might not suffice. Use a Melamine Sponge for tougher stains and marks, especially around corners and seams where the baseboards and wall meet. This magical sponge is effective at removing paint marks and difficult stains without damaging the surface. A Toothbrush is excellent for cleaning joints and smaller details, such as the grooves in wood baseboards, removing dust and accumulated dirt that a cloth might miss. Both items ensure a deeper, more effective clean, leaving your baseboards looking pristine.
Maintenance Tips Add baseboard cleaning to your monthly routine for best results. After cleaning, wipe the baseboards with a dryer sheet to repel dust and pet hair. Avoid dragging vacuums or furniture near baseboards to prevent scuffs and chips. Why Choose Speed Cleaning Products? Speed Cleaning products, like Red Juice and Sh-Clean, are non-toxic, eco-friendly, and highly effective. Pair them with our durable cotton cloths for the perfect cleaning duo. Why Professional Cleaners Should Avoid Ammonia and Choose Safer Alternatives
by Amy Sardone on Dec 06, 2024
As professional cleaners, the products we use are more than tools—they reflect the care we provide to our clients, our teams, and the environment. Ammonia, a common cleaning agent, is often chosen for its ability to cut through grime and grease, particularly in glass and surface cleaners. But have you considered the risks it poses?
After years in the cleaning industry, I’ve come to realize that the products we choose impact not only the surfaces we clean but also the air we breathe, the ecosystems we touch, and the health of everyone we serve. This is why I’ve committed to avoiding ammonia in my cleaning practices—and I encourage you to do the same.
What Is Ammonia?
Ammonia (NH3) is a colorless gas with a pungent odor commonly found in household and industrial cleaning products. Its alkaline properties make it effective at dissolving grease, grime, and stains. However, this cleaning powerhouse comes with significant drawbacks for both health and the environment.
The Hidden Dangers of Ammonia
1. Health Risks for Cleaners
Professional cleaners are often exposed to chemicals for long hours, making them especially vulnerable to the effects of ammonia:
Respiratory Irritation: Ammonia fumes can irritate the nose, throat, and lungs, causing coughing, sneezing, or even more severe conditions like bronchitis or pneumonia. Those with asthma or other respiratory conditions are particularly at risk.
Skin Damage: Direct contact with ammonia can cause burns, irritation, or dermatitis, especially on sensitive skin.
Eye Irritation: Ammonia fumes can sting and water the eyes, making it harder to work efficiently.
In poorly ventilated spaces, such as bathrooms or small offices, ammonia fumes can linger, turning these areas into hazardous zones.
2. Environmental Impact
Ammonia also harms the environment:
Indoor Air Pollution: Ammonia contributes to poor indoor air quality, which can lead to headaches, fatigue, and respiratory issues for occupants.
Ecosystem Disruption: Ammonia runoff into waterways or soil can cause nutrient imbalances, leading to harmful algal blooms and disrupting aquatic life.
As cleaners committed to sustainability, it’s crucial to recognize that what goes down the drain impacts the larger community.

Choosing non-toxic products isn’t just about avoiding risks—it’s a statement about our values. By using safer alternatives, we demonstrate:
