Hairspray. Wonderful on your hair, not so great on everything else. Unless you go outside to spray your hair, you’ll need to periodically clean up the hairspray overspray. Here are some tips from your cleaning experts at Speed Cleaning:

    1. Use rubbing/isopropyl alcohol (70%) on a cotton ball or soft cloth to dissolve hairspray droplets and that fine layer of spray you can feel on mirrors, faucets, natural stone countertops and tile, laminate, and most cultured marble surfaces. You may have to go over the spots many times to completely dissolve the hardened droplets of spray; then clean the area again with plain water or a cleaner of your choice to remove any smears and streaks. Try a microfiber cloth for this final wipe – they’re great!

    2.  Vinegar and citrus/acid-based cleaners are too acidic and will damage the finish on granite, natural marble, limestone, and travertine countertops and tile. Ammonia-based cleaners like some glass cleaning products aren’t good for the finish either. You will need a cleaner that is pH neutral for surfaces like that. A great gentle, pH neutral cleaner is Sh-Clean.

    3. Painted or stained wood doors and woodwork can also be cleaned with rubbing alcohol if plain water isn’t doing the trick. You can also use a dab of hair shampoo on a damp cloth to dissolve the hairspray. Whichever method you choose, be sure to follow up with a damp cloth and then dry.

    4. Make a solution of vinegar and water in a spray bottle to wipe down painted walls.

    5. To clean hairspray overspray off of vinyl flooring, mop with a strong vinegar and water solution. You can add a small amount of mild dish soap if you wish. For a really heavy buildup, pour a little rubbing alcohol right on the floor, working in small patches at a time and wiping up as the hairspray is dissolved. After either method, mop the entire area with plain water to lift off any remaining residue and smears.

    6. Cut through the buildup on wood floors by wiping the area down with a couple tablespoons of Sh-Clean in a bucket of warm water. Follow up with a clean cloth dampened with plain water, and then dry the area. This cleaner will safely soften and dissolve the hairspray.

TIP 7:  A great choice for cleaning all types of flooring including poly-coated wood and marble is Speed Cleaning’s Sh-Clean Floor Cleaner. Gentle Sh-Clean is pH-neutral, doesn’t contain any wax, and doesn’t require rinsing. It comes in a concentrate so you can customize the strength and leaves floors sparkling clean.

The bottom line when it comes to cleaning up hairspray is to tackle it more frequently, rather than letting the buildup get heavy. So spray away, hairspray lovers, now that you know how to easily clean it up!
