How To Help Your Kids Control Their Clutter
Do your children have trouble keeping their rooms clean? Although kids are great at coming up with excuses for not keeping their rooms clean, one excuse is perfectly valid — they don’t have a system that works for them. Well, here are some ideas you can use to help your kids keep their rooms somewhat more civilized:
Many kids don’t hang up their clothes because they literally can’t reach the closet rods or hooks. Lower them or install them in more accessible places. And make sure they have enough hangers.
Set up an organization system. Label drawers, shelves, and baskets with pictures or words… “Shoes,” “Sweaters,” “Socks,” “Games,” “Books,” etc. This provides a designated place for everything and is usually easy.
Use inexpensive plastic baskets, tackle boxes, and tool boxes to contain and organize smaller items such as art supplies, toy cars, blocks, action figures, and trading cards.
What you view as junk may be your child’s treasure. Go through the current collection of trinkets (e.g. Happy Meal toys) with your child to whittle it down to the “must keep” stuff, and put the rest in a container of its own. Let your child know that when the container is full, it’s time to purge.
Keep a waste basket in your child’s room, and a laundry basket as well. This makes it easier for your child to be tidy and for you when it comes time to clean and gather laundry.
You can take it one step further and give them a simple cleaning kit of their very own. For young children, a duster and small whisk broom with a dust pan would be a good choice.
By providing your children with the means of keeping organized now, the better the chances are that they will be organized later in life.

If you work top to bottom and left to right, you’re working once instead of cleaning areas you’ve already cleaned. Clean floors last.

Feel free to modify this sample schedule to meet your needs. Just try not to skip a day because it will take more time to bring your house up to a level of cleanliness if you overlook something for a week and let the grime build up. Stay consistent and cleaning will be easy.
MONDAY: Dust every room, working your way through your house from top to bottom.
TUESDAY: Vacuum every room, working your way through the house from top to bottom.
WEDNESDAY: Clean bathrooms. Scrub toilets, sinks, and wipe down mirrors.

The Best Way to Clean Up Heavy Dust
Break out the vacuum and follow these Speed Cleaning steps
Raise your hand if you have a ceiling fan! If the ceiling fan can get that dusty, so can everything else in the room that doesn’t get dusted during a routine cleaning. We’re talking about things like crown molding, stationary window treatments, light fixtures, the corners where cobwebs gather, etc. For cleaning up heavy dust in these areas, Speed Cleaning recommends using a vacuum cleaner. So let’s get started:
? Consider using an extension cord on your vacuum so that you don’t have to move the plug around to reach every corner of the entire area you plan to clean. This will save you valuable time – we are called Speed Cleaning, after all!
? Start with the extension wand(s) on your vacuum hose or use a broom to grab cobwebs. Did you know that cobwebs are abandoned spider webs that you don’t see until they get coated with dust? Anyway, go all the way around the room, taking care of the high areas first while you have the extension wands in place. Use a brush attachment for delicate and detailed areas such as ceiling fixtures and carved molding. The attachment also works well on the tops of fabric window treatments and curtain rods.
? Then remove the extension wands and follow the Speed Cleaning Rules by starting in one corner of the room and cleaning from the top (the uppermost point that you haven’t already cleaned) to the floor, then move over and repeat, vacuuming everything in your path as you go: upholstery, lampshades, plants, drapes, blinds, window sills, shutters, air vents, and electronics like the TV including the cords and the back of the units. If you notice something is broken, repair it or get rid of it.
? This type of cleaning is considered heavy cleaning, so move furniture, lamps, TVs – anything that you can – to clean the object and the area underneath it.
? As you vacuum small items, clean one at a time and carefully set it aside in somewhat the same arrangement so that it will be easier to restore everything to the original position when you put it back. Vacuum the bare surface and replace the clean items.
And there you have it. By the time you make it all the way around the room, it should look great!

Tips for Prepping Your Home for the Holidays!
Whether you’re going to be hosting a Halloween party, Thanksgiving, or just having a few casual gatherings with family and friends over the holidays, now is a great time to get your house in order before things start getting hectic. With that in mind, we want to help you with some tips for stress-free cleaning so your home can stay tidy during this holiday season.
Ditch the clutter
We’ve covered this before, but it’s a great tip for tackling clutter: Go from room to room with an empty laundry basket to pick up clutter that doesn’t belong in the room. Move methodically, from left to right around the room so that you know everything behind you is clutter-free and you can focus your attention on the mess in front of you. If you don’t have time to sort through the items before your guests arrive, you can stash the basket in a closet or unused room until you get a chance to go through each item one by one and put everything back in its rightful place.
Prioritize your efforts
Start cleaning in the most important room in your house, the one where you’ll get the most bang for your buck with your cleaning effort. In my house, that’s the kitchen, because the kitchen is where everyone spends the majority of their time during any visit or gathering. You can also decide to start with the most difficult room, the one you’re dreading the most (e.g. the bathroom, in my case!). So tie on your Speed Cleaning™ Apron and get started! Move all your furniture to clean underneath
During the holidays you might have to get creative with making space in your living room to accommodate lots of people. How to Clean with Other People!
If you’re lucky enough to have one or two other people to help you clean, be sure you have someone to lead the team. This way, you’ll avoid the chaos of having people potentially cleaning areas that were already just cleaned by someone else. Decide who will take which room, and start from there. Parse the home into sections and assign a particular area to one person.
Start by dusting the living room and then the bedrooms. Then, when the bathroom person is done with the bathroom, have them vacuum the rooms that have already been dusted. When the kitchen person finishes, have them make the beds with you. Don’t make a bed alone, because two people can make a bed FOUR TIMES FASTER than one person.
The main goal is to finish cleaning at the same time. Identify the longest job and get it started at the right time. Usually, this is the vacuuming.
Here are the basics of getting this right:
If the longest job isn’t finished when the rest of the jobs are, start that long job sooner the next time you clean.
If you all end up in the same room at the end, then dust that room sooner, or vacuum it sooner, or empty the trash from it sooner.
If dusting is taking too long, have a second person do some of the dusting.
If you aren’t finishing at the same time, save all the short jobs for last—emptying trash, making beds, putting rugs back in place, and finishing touches.
Still having problems finishing together? Sit down and discuss. Someone else on the team might have suggestions for how to get things done more efficiently.

Much Ado About Mildew: the Scum Bum Days of Summer
9 ways to prevent mildew
HOW DO I REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF MILDEW IN THE BATHROOM?
Mildew thrives in damp, dark, misty conditions and your bathroom couldn’t be more perfect as a home for mildew. Here are some suggestions to chase away mildew demons lurking in your bathroom:
1. Keep surfaces clean. Dirt, grease, and body oils are like Thanksgiving dinner to mildew. Speed Cleaning™ Scum Bum is a great tool to use to keep those bathroom surfaces mildew-free.
2. Keep a squeegee in the shower and use it on the shower walls, door, and floor after showering. Towel those surfaces dry after squeegeeing in extreme cases.
3. Leave the shower door open or the shower curtains parted after you’re done showering.
4. Open a window to keep fresh air circulating.
5. Leave the bathroom door ajar during showering.
6. Hang the towels so they will dry completely before the next day’s use.
7. Put a portable fan in the bathroom and turn it on after showering to help exchange wet bathroom air for drier air from other rooms.
8. Get a dehumidifier for the bathroom.
9. Get really serious and install an exhaust fan.
Note: when building a home, install windows in the bathroom that are at least as big as windows in the other rooms of the house. Clear glass will make the room more appealing. If privacy is an issue, use the same window covering that you use on windows in other rooms, except for mini-blinds.
MILDEW IN GROUTHow do I get rid of the mildew that builds up in the white grout around the tile in my bathroom shower?
First, clean the grout as you clean the tiles to remove as much of the mildew as possible. Speed Cleaning™ Scum Bum is your friend here. Just spray it on— it won’t create noxious fumes or etch or corrode non-porous surfaces.
If stains remain (and white grout often becomes permanently stained), a grout coloring agent can help. It covers up stains rather than bleaches them. The steps involved are: Clean the grout, seal it, then recolor it. The coloring product has its own applicator. Apply it, let it dry, and then wipe off any excess. Don’t use this product on floors because it won’t stay white very long, or on working countertops because of the various stain-producing spills that happen there. But it works well on shower walls. But remember: it cannot fix grout that is not there. That’s up to you.
MILDEW IN FIBERGLASS AND TILE SHOWERS
What’s the best way to remove mildew from a fiberglass or tile shower?
Most mildew will be removed via weekly cleaning, using standard Speed Cleaning methods. In other words, apply Speed Cleaning™ Red Juice, agitate with a Speed Cleaning™ White Pad, and a Speed Cleaning™ Toothbrush, and then rinse. This will remove soap scum and water spots, and it will also remove most or all of the mildew. If mildew remains, apply Speed Cleaning™ Scum Bum.

6 Quick Tips for a Cleaner Home
1. Get organized!
No seriously, when you can actually see the floor it’s a lot easier to justify plugging in the vacuum to take it for a spin. One of our favorite mantras here is “A place for everything and everything in its place.” As soon as you come in the door, hang your jacket up, don’t leave it draped over a chair. Put your laundry away as soon as it’s folded. Do your best to get the kids toys put away each day.
2. Develop a habit
Last year I decided I was finally going to exercise more and the only way that this actually came true was that I developed a routine to follow every day. The same thing is true for cleaning. Just 10 minutes a day will help your home remain in a continuously clean state. Don’t try to leave it all to be dealt with once a month or once a quarter. That’s like me deciding to run a half-marathon a few weeks before it started. (Spoiler alert: not a good idea).
3. Wipe down surfaces every day
As part of that 10-minutes-a-day habit, be sure you’re wiping off countertops and tables daily. Use an eco-friendly cleaner like Red Juice so you never have to worry about your food coming into contact with the clean countertop or table. As a bonus, since you’re wiping down these surfaces, you’re forced to deal with any clutter that might be threatening to accumulate on the flat space. This helps you stay on top of that ever-present danger of things piling up where they shouldn’t.
4. Wash dishes and pots as you cook
Something a friend mentioned decades ago always echoes in my head as I’m cleaning up my mess in the kitchen: “Clean as you go… that’s the sign of a pro.” It’s a huge temptation to leave your pots and pans and dirty dishes in the sink to deal with tomorrow so that you can sit down to your delicious meal and then digest it peacefully. Instead, while you have a few minutes (like when water is boiling), turn your attention to whatever awaits you in the sink and take care of it NOW. If you keep up with the pace of dirtying the dishes, the only ones you have to clean at the end of the night are the ones you ate your dinner on. Delicious!
5. Take it one room at a time.
Even with your 10 minutes a day cleaning, you’ll need to do a deep clean every once in a while. Your best bet is to choose one room at a time and focus all your energy on making it shine. Then take a week or so off, and for your next deep clean choose another room. No matter which room you choose to tackle, you’ll be more efficient with one of our cleaning aprons.
6. Keep your cleaning supplies handy
This is a game-changer. Instead of keeping everything together under the sink or in a closet, sprinkle your cleaning supplies throughout the house so that whenever you notice something needs cleaning, you can take care of it immediately. At a minimum, keep a bottle of Red Juice, a microfiber cleaning cloth, and a sponge in both the bathroom and kitchen.

The Best Way to Clean Baseboards and Keep Them Spotless for Longer

Gather Your Cleaning Supplies
Before starting, gather all the necessary tools and cleaning supplies to save time and energy. Here's what you’ll need:
Vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment

Everyone talks about Spring Cleaning as if it’s the only season to thoroughly tidy up your home, but I’m more partial to Fall Cleaning. And now that fall is officially here, I’m ready to get my house in shape for cozy days and longer nights as the sun goes down earlier and earlier.So how can you turn this into a task that seems manageable? Hopefully you’ve been keeping up with your maintenance cleanings every week so you’re not tackling an extremely messy house. If you’re short on time, pick one or two things to take care of per week with an eye toward having your house in perfect shape by the time company arrives for the holidays.Here are a few other tips to make your life easier as you complete your Fall Cleaning:
Make every move count. Be efficient! Work your way around a room once, carrying all your tools and supplies with you in a cleaning apron. Stop wasting energy by darting all around a room, and start cleaning around the room in one direction.
Use the right tools. This is where the apron comes in handy, making it easy to carry your supplies and tools. Stuff garbage or wet sponges into the apron’s pockets to save time.
Work from top to bottom. You can’t fight gravity, so work with it! Clean ceilings and high shelves of dust and bits of grime that will fall to the floor where you can vacuum them up. Start at the top and work your way down.
Don’t overclean things that aren’t dirty. Spot clean areas with your bottle of Red Juice to wipe away fingerprints and move on to the next surface.
Clean surfaces before you rinse or wipe them. Don’t rinse or wipe a surface before it’s really clean.
Know when to give up on a tool. Recognize if the tool you’re using isn’t working instead of using more elbow grease and tiring yourself out unnecessarily.
Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. Your moves get smoother by practicing them over and over. Put your cleaning tools back in the same spot in your apron each time you use them. When pull out your Red Juice, your hand will know exactly where it is in the apron.
Pay attention. Don’t zone out but focus on the task at hand. You may even find that you’re enjoying what you’re doing!
Use both your hands. Don’t leave any scrubbing or wiping capacity idle. Spray with one hand while you reach for the cloth in your apron with the other to wipe up behind it.
Track your time. Note what time you started and stopped and marvel at how much you accomplished.

Has this ever happened to you? You get a phone call during the busy holiday season that friends are in your part of town and want to stop by. With their thoughtful heads up, you have thirty minutes to dash through your home and prepare it for visitors. Here are some tips on how to whip your house into shape before they arrive.
First things first—decide which rooms get priority. Are your guests going to be hanging out in the living room or are they going to be clustered around your kitchen for a more casual visit? Focus on the room that they’ll be spending the most time in. Strap on your cleaning apron and get started.
If you’ve been following the rules of Clutter Control, you shouldn’t have a lot of items to pick up. Everything has a place, and whenever you use something, be sure to put it back into its rightful place. If the clock is ticking, you can sweep every visible item into a laundry basket to deal with after they leave, then stash the basket in your bedroom.
Be sure to give the bathroom a once-over as well. This is where your speed cleaning training kicks into gear. Wipe the mirror from top to bottom and clean as efficiently as possible. Check to be sure the toilet is sparkling and the sink is clean. Make sure that there are fresh towels for your guests to use to dry their hands and a new bar of soap or plenty of soap in the dispenser.
Giving the entryway a quick vacuum is a great idea, since that’s probably where the most grime has accumulated since your last clean. Slurp up the dirt and quickly cover other carpeted areas that might be seen. If you have time to spare, pull out that batch of cookie dough you’ve been nibbling on and throw some cookies into the oven. You’ll be sure to lure everyone into the kitchen for a cozy treat if they smell those baking when they walk in the door.

If you have wood or other hard-surface floors in rooms besides the kitchen and bathrooms, and if you have one or more dust bunnies of any species, you should own a dust mop. (Kitchen and bathroom floors should be wet-mopped.) The floor attachment to a vacuum does a pretty good job of removing dust and debris from hard floors, but the vacuum doesn’t “wipe” the surface of the floor the same way a dust mop does. Imagine vacuuming the top of a dusty glass table instead of wiping it with a cloth, and you will understand the difference between vacuuming and dust-mopping a floor. Also, a vacuum doesn’t restore the floor’s shine the way a dust mop does.
The best treatment for floors is a combination of both: vacuum the floors most of the time, and dust-mop only occasionally. If your home has a rug over most of the hardwood, the hardwood is usually exposed for a foot or two around the edge of the rug. In such rooms, a dust mop isn’t as effective as a vacuum. If you get a dust mop, though, make sure it is small enough to fit into that border without touching the carpet. This works usually if you just turn the dust mop sideways and push forward as usual.
