Easy ways to make a home look better and increase in value
Reality TV shows on decorating and staging a home have raised the bar for what we expect when viewing a home that’s listed for sale. With only one chance to make a first impression, you can’t afford to blow it. Getting top dollar for your home these days can be the difference between a home people like and a home people love. Use these three easy home clean-up tips from America’s Top Cleaning Expert Debbie Sardone to create a listing people will fight over.
- Un-Home It – Turn your HOME back into a HOUSE. It’s not personal, it’s business. Depersonalize. The goal is to remove as much of your presence and personal touch as possible (the things that make the house your home) while you’re still residing there, as well as presenting a property that is spacious, clean, and well-maintained.
- Un-Clutter It – Think HALF! De-clutter by reducing your stuff by half or more. Remove half of what’s stored in closets, cabinets, the pantry, and fixed drawers. You’re moving anyway, right? So start to pack early! You don’t need ALL of that stuff at your fingertips on a daily basis. And then organize what’s left by using labeled matching bins and baskets. The uniform look is neat and will make the space look larger.
- Un-Decorate It – I know it sounds like a contradiction since the TV shows make us think every inch of the house needs decor. But unless you’ve hired a top-notch interior decorator, you probably have too many foo-foo pillows, knick knacks, pictures, paintings, chairs, tables, doilies, figurines, and the like! Less is best.
So what do you do with all of your extra “stuff”? Consider renting a storage unit while your house is on the market. As Debbie says, “Invest in selling your house.” Off-site storage, professional deep cleaning, landscape maintenance – spending some money to present your house in the best possible condition will not only help it sell faster, it may help you get more money for it.
